Genome Canada wishes to commend the Government of Canada on a comprehensive new strategy – Seizing Canada’s Moment: Moving Forward in Science Technology and Innovation 2014.

In particular, we are pleased to see prominent recognition of the role that new technologies, including genomics, can play in transforming our economy and enhancing Canadians’ quality of life.

We are supportive of the priority areas for research identified, which include natural resources and energy, health and life sciences, information and communications technologies, advanced manufacturing and environment, including a focus on agriculture. As an enabling technology with multidisciplinary applications across the life sciences, genomics can contribute solutions in virtually all of these sectors.

Genome Canada’s strategic plan for the next five years aligns closely with this new ST&I strategy. Our suite of programs are designed to support the research continuum from discovery-driven research to applications-oriented projects, geared toward fostering innovation and commercialization.

We look forward to continuing our work with federal, provincial, not-for-profit and private sectors partners to employ genomics in advancing the goals and objectives of Canada’s ST&I strategy for the benefit of all Canadians.
