John MacKay is specialized in forest genomics. His interests include adaptation to environmental change, tree-insect interactions, genome evolution, and forest genetic resources. He has led multidisciplinary genomics projects and a network in intensive forestry, and has participated in international initiatives. New areas of activity include conservation and forest landscape restoration. He has authored 93 peer-reviewed publications and supervised a total of 40 postgraduate students and research staff.

He previously has worked as a research scientist and assistant professor at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology in the United States and as a professor at Laval University. He was Associate Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics at Laval University for two years.

He obtained a Ph.D. in genetics at North Carolina State University, a B.Sc. and a M.Sc. in forest sciences at Laval University.
